The San Diego Center for Spinal Disorders is happy to welcome Gregory M. Mundis, Jr., M.D. to its family. Dr. Mundis is an Orthopaedic Surgeon specializing in spine surgery. He received his medical degree from the University of Missouri, Columbia. He continued his training with an orthopaedic residency at Oklahoma University Health Sciences Center, in Oklahoma City.
After completion of his residency, Dr. Mundis sought out further specialization in Spine Surgery and was selected for a fellowship at the San Diego Spine Fellowship Program located at the San Diego Center for Spinal Disorders in La Jolla, CA under the direction of Dr. Behrooz Akbarnia. Dr. Mundis treats all spine disorders and has focused his training to subspecialize in Adult and Pediatric Spine Deformity surgery as well as in cervical spine surgery.
Dr. Mundis has had a productive academic year, completing two book chapters on Early Onset Scoliosis, publishing an article on adult scoliosis, presenting his research in Vienna, Austria at the 16th annual IMAST meeting, and the upcoming SRS annual meeting in San Antonio. He has had 10 research projects accepted for presentation this year alone including topics of adult and pediatric scoliosis, and the use of visual evoked potentials in monitoring for blindness during long spine surgery.
Research is a very important to Dr. Mundis’ practice as he feels that the study of patients and their outcome will lead to improvement in spine care delivery. As such, he is an active member of the International Spine Study Group (ISSG) and the Growing Spine Study Group (GSSG). These are international research teams that are composed of leading physicians in adult and pediatric spinal deformity surgery. He is also an active member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and a candidate fellow of the Scoliosis Research Society and North American Spine Society.
Perhaps the most important part of Dr. Mundis’ career is his wife and three children. They have enjoyed the move from the Midwest, and are now firmly integrated in the San Diego community and look forward to serving the area both professionally and personally.
Ashley Polage is the Clinical Assistant to Dr. Mundis.
